Your electric furnace is dead. Or worse, it clicks once and then sends your entire house into darkness. Before you call an HVAC pro for a pricey service call, look at the breaker panel. If the switch has flipped to the middle or off position, you are dealing with a tripped breaker. This is one of the most common issues homeowners face during heating season. It is not necessarily a sign that your furnace is broken. It is often a safety mechanism doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
Tripping the breaker protects your wiring from overheating and potentially starting a fire. However, it also leaves you in the cold. Here is how to safely reset it and determine if you need professional help or if you can fix it yourself.
Check the Breaker Panel
Start at your main electrical panel. Look for a double-pole breaker, which controls the high-voltage power to your furnace. It will usually be labeled “Furnace,” “HVAC,” or “Heat.” The switch will be in an unfamiliar position.
Never touch the metal parts inside the panel. Keep your body and tools dry. Wear rubber-soled shoes if possible.
Flip the breaker fully to the “Off” position first. Then flip it back to “On.” You should hear a solid click. If it trips immediately or within seconds, stop. Do not try to force it.
Why Does It Trip?
An electric furnace draws a lot of power. It uses resistors to generate heat, similar to a toaster but on a massive scale. If the amperage exceeds the rating of the breaker, the circuit opens. Several things can cause this:
- Dirty Air Filters: Restricted airflow causes the furnace to overwork. The blower motor and heating elements draw more current to compensate.
- Failed Blower Motor: If the motor is seized or worn out, it draws excessive amps.

- Loose Wiring: Corroded or loose connections at the terminal block create resistance and heat.
- Overloaded Circuit: Other appliances on the same circuit (like a space heater or dryer) can push the total load over the limit.
Safety First
Electric furnaces operate at 240 volts. This is not a toy. If you are not comfortable working with high-voltage electricity, stop here and call an electrician or HVAC technician.
If you proceed:
- Turn off the power at the breaker before opening the furnace cabinet.
- Wear protective gear. Safety glasses and insulated gloves are recommended.
- Use non-conductive tools. Plastic-handled screwdrivers are best.

Resetting and Testing
After flipping the breaker back on, go to your thermostat. Set it to “Heat” and raise the temperature above the current room temperature. Listen for the furnace to start.
